　　Why are humans a very strange species of animals? Because it take us so long to grow into mature adults. Many of our customs such as marriage and education revolve around this reality of slow development. It takes a human animal a very long time to fully develop our individually unique and immense capacities to define and change our environment.

　　But our individual growth also has a spiritual or moral aspect. What profits a man to gain the world, if he looses his immortal soul? That is an old question that each of us must find an answer to. Growing for humans is both learning how to “do more things” and finding out what it means to be friendly.

　　Friendship exists prior to love. We rarely choose to be intimate with a person who is not friendly. If you know how to be friendly, you know how to be a good neighbor, a good member of your family, a good wife or a good husband. While bad things can happen to anyone, those who are friendly will usually have friends that can help out when the bad times come.

　　Growing can also be seen as learning how “to be a little nicer.” This process occurs in our dreams and as we play. Being nice, even when others are not nice to you, is certainly one of the strange behaviors that you can exhibit. None the less, if you con-sistently display kindness you can expect to live in a society where most individuals are polite and friendly. This moral proposition is one that you accept on the basis of faith in the essential goodness of other humans. Music is one of the educational ways we question and explore the limits of our humanity.
