On top of Old Smoky
All covered with snow
I lost my true lover
For courtin’s too slow
For courtin’s a pleasure
And parting is grief
And a false-hearted lover
Is worse than a thief
For a thief will just rob you
And take all your pay
But a false-hearted lover
Will lead you astray
On top of Old Smoky
All covered with snow
I lost my true lover
For courtin’ too slow

Introduction to the Song
For most of us romance is a most confusing activity. Temporary setbacks seem like colossal embarrassments and total failures. We want everyone to forget our previous commitments of deep love.
Since love must be reciprocated for it to grow and endure, love’s failure to thrive implies either we were unworthy of being loved or we failed to give back love to the one who had expected it.
We usually forget that mature adults recognize how confusing life and love can be. Family and true friends have their own worries and hopes. Reasonable people usually will attend to their own affairs and not be overly interested in judging your love life. So don’t worry even your most disastrous romance will soon pass from almost everyone’s memory.
